꾸준히도 앨범 자켓을 올리는 이유는 사실 예전 어릴 때 TAPE, CD, LP를 구매했을 때에는
사실 볼 정도가 거의 없기 때문에 자켓의 그림의 구석구석까지 모두 눈에 넣고 다녔던 것 같다.
이제는, 음악 자체를 CD로 듣지도 않을 뿐더라, 씨디가 있더라도
MP로 리핑해서 듣기 때문에 자켓이 머리 속에 남는 경우가 사실 많지 않아서
기억하기 위해서도 있다.
이번 곡은 I WANT TO BREAK FREE 이며, 워낙에 유명한 곡이라...
이것이 바로, 미국 시장에서 뮤직비디오 때문에 해당 음반의 마케팅을 포기할 정도로 반향이 컸던 뮤직비디오이다.
솔직히 무슨 생각에 이런 뮤지 비디오를 만들었는지, 1984년 시대에 내놓기에는
사실 너무 앞서간게 아닌가 싶기도 하다.
저 콧수염만 없었으면 그나마 덜 했을텐데..
아니면, 프레디가 가지고 있는 게이의 여성성을 나타내기 위함일까 하는 의구심도 들긴 한다.

사실 이 노래가 굉장히 유명해져서 편히 듣는 거라고 생각하는데, 실제 스튜디오 버전을 들어보면 사실
굉장히 음악이 유하게 들린다.
뭔가 맥이 빠진 듯한 사운드 와 보컬.

"I Want to Break Free" is a song by the British rock band Queen, from their eleventh album The Works (1984). It was written by bass guitarist John Deacon and was released in three versions: album, single and extended. It came to be included in most live concerts by the group, in several videos and in The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert where it was sung by Lisa Stansfield.
베이시스트인 존 디콘에 작곡을 했고, 총 3가지 버전이 있다. 앨범 버전, 싱글 버전, 확장 버전.
프레디 머큐리의 트리뷰트 공연에서 리사 스탠스필드가 불렀다.
오호....내가 개인적으로 정말 좋아하는 버전이다. 노래를 너무 잘 했음.
The song is largely known for its music video for which all the band members dressed in women's clothes, a concept proposed by Roger Taylor, which parodied the long-running ITV soap opera Coronation Street. The second part of the video included a composition rehearsed and performed with the Royal Ballet and choreographed by Wayne Eagling. Whereas the parody was acclaimed in the United Kingdom, it was considered controversial in the United States and banned by MTV[2] and other stations.

After its release in 1984, the song was well received in Europe and South America and is regarded as an anthem of the fight against oppression. The single reached only number 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but reached number three in the UK and was certified silver with over 200,000 copies sold.[3] It also topped the charts of Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
억압에 반대하는 곡으로 되었다는데....이건 또 뭔 이유일까?

Most of the song follows the traditional 12 bar blues progression in E major. It has three verses with one bridge, no chorus and relatively little section repetition.[5] There are three versions of the song: album, single and extended.

This rhythm continues through most of the song, stopping only for its first line. The first verse ends at 0:37 and is followed by a very similar second verse, which is however shorter by one line. A stacked guitar accompaniment (Red Special) appears at the end of the second verse (1:03), and between 1:15 and 1:17 it is replaced by a synthesizer. A synthesizer solo starts at 1:33 and is assisted by a guitar. The last verse starts in the second minute, it additionally features a synthesizer and a Fender Stratocaster guitar. The song pauses at the final line "I've got to break free", followed by the fade out. This version was released on the album The Works and on some singles.
일단 앨범 버전에 대한 내용 설명인데, 솔직히 그다지...큰 의미는 없어보인다. 그냥 노래 들으면서 나온 악기의 순서 및 내용들을 정리해놓은 것 뿐.
The regular single version lasts 4 minutes 21 seconds and differs from the album version by the 40-second introduction and a longer synthesizer solo which starts at 2:33. The introduction is played on an electronic keyboard and is assisted by cymbals, drums and a guitar (Red Special).
이번에는 싱글 버전. 4분 21초로, 앨범 저번보다 대략 1분이더 길다.
인트로가 40초가 되고, 신서사이저 솔로도 더 길다.
이 곡이 싱글 버전의 곡이다.
우리가 라이브에서 하도 많이 들었던 버전은 앨범 버전이 아닌 싱글 버전으로
개인적으로는 싱글 버전이 더 귀에 착착 감기고 좋다.
물론, 이 곡을 밴드할 때 연주했다는 것 때문은 아니겠지만...
The extended version lasts 7 minutes 16 seconds and features longer introduction and ending. It lasts until 6:04, and the remaining minute contains fragments of other songs from The Works. The extended version was mostly distributed as 12-inch vinyl records and then reissued on the CD of The Works in 1991.

이 곡이 EXTENDED VERSION이다.
According to May in an interview about Queen's Greatest Hits, whereas the video was understood and taken as a joke in UK, the US audience failed to see the soap-opera connection and might have interpreted the video as an open declaration of transvestism and Mercury's bisexuality.
여기에 결정적으로 미국에서 금지된 이유가 나온다.
영국에서는 이미 SOAP OPERA가 방영되고 상황이기에, 영국 사람들은 조크 및 패러디로 봤던 것인데,
미국에서느 SOAP OPERA를 보지 못한 상태에서는 당연히 머큐리의 바이섹슈얼이라고 생각을 한다는 것.
찾아보니, SOAP OPERA는 특별한 것은 아니고, 일일 드라마 정도라고 보여지며, CORONATION STREET를 보고 패러디 했다고 하는데, 유튜브에서도 어떤 것인지 나오지는 않는다.
솔직히, 이건 브라이언 메이 말이 맞다.
우리는 이 뮤직비디오를 보고, 패러디 일꺼라고는 생각을 전혀 못했으니까...
LIVE PERFORMANCE
After the release of The Works, the song was performed at almost all of Queen's live concerts. Spike Edney usually played the synthesizer introduction, after which Mercury appeared on stage, often in the outfit worn in the video – dark bobbed wig, pink blouse and false breasts – which he would remove later during the song.[20][22] Brian May played the guitar solo on his Red Special. Some lines were sung by the audience, and "God knows" was chanted by the whole group. Live recordings of the song appeared on the concert albums Live Magic, Live at Wembley '86 and Return of the Champions. In addition, the song was performed at several concerts which were then included in Queen's videos such as Queen at Wembley, We Are the Champions: Final Live in Japan, The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and Return of the Champions.[23]
Lisa Stansfield led the song in The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.[24] She appeared on stage dressed as a housewife with a vacuum cleaner, as in the original video. The song was also performed in many concerts of the project Queen + Paul Rodgers, where Paul Rodgers took vocals, Danny Miranda played the bass guitar and Spike Edney was at the keyboard.[25]
Starting in July 2004, a remixed one-minute version of the song was featured in a Coca-Cola C2 video advertisement.[26]
쭉 내용을 읽어보면, 라이브에서 대부분 공연이 되었고 뮤직비디오에 나온 복장으로 신서사이저 인트로가 나올 때 그 복장으로 나왔다는 것.

내가 이 곡을 보고 사실 충격을 많이 받은 이유가, 이 곡을 어쩜 저렇게 부드러운 보이스로
구렁이 담 넘어가듯이 유연하게 부르는지 사실...입이 떡 벌어졌다.
난 이곡을 들은 이후에는 사실 원곡보다도 LISA 곡을 더 좋아한다.
정말로 노래를 너무 자신한테 잘 맞게 잘 소화했다.
2분 42분 부터의 보컬은 정말 소름이 끼치게 좋다.
아담 램버트....는 나랑 안 맞는거 같다. 그래서 안 올릴린다. -.-;
