이 번에 소개할 곡은 라이브에서 항상 연주가 되는
HAMMER TO FALL이다.
이 곡은 원곡보다는 머릿속에 항상 남는 커버곡이 있는데, 그거는 조금 있다가 소개하기로 해야겠다.
"Hammer to Fall"
"Hammer to Fall", the eighth song, is May's other rock song on the album. Live versions were considerably faster and he sang it in his solo tours as well. Synths are played by Mandel and most of vocal harmonies were recorded by May himself, particularly in the bridge (save for "oh no" which is Taylor). The song harks back to the Queen of old, with a song being built around a hard angular and muscular riff. The song features Mercury on lead vocals, doing a call and response with May, who sings the chorus. The song's music video directed by David Mallet, contains footage of a performance of the song in Brussels.[6] "Hammer to Fall" was a concert favourite, and was the third song the band performed at Live Aid in 1985.[7] The song also features in both the setlist of the band's Works Tour and Magic Tour in 1986.[8]
라이브 버전에서는 CONSIDERABLE 빠르다는데...HIS SOLE 투어라고 하면, 뭔 얘기일까나..
느낌으로는, BRIAN MAY가 이끄는 퀸을 얘기하는 걸까?
보컬의 하모니도 MAY가 하고, 거의 뭐 모든 파트를 다 MAY 혼자서 독차지 했구만.
곡이 얼마나 인기가 많으면, 다음 앨범인 MAGIC TOUR에서까지 SETLIST에 포함이 되었다니...

누가 뭐래도, 라이브 버전의 백미는 WEMBLEY LIVE AID 1985 버전이 아닐까 싶다.
모든 걸 다 쏟아부은 듯한 느낌의 라이브이다.
이번에는 WEMBLEY LIVE 1986버전이다.
다른 사람들 옷은 후질근하게 입었는데, MAY만 저 멋진 자태를 보라...
DEACON하고 복장 차이가 너무 나는데...ㅋㅋ

ROXXON 밴드인데...어느나라 일려나...
곡에 대한 느낌은 원곡을 그대로 살려낸 느낌이다. 라이브 버전에서의 신남을 속도를 이용해서 더 활용했으면 좋은데,
원곡의 느낌을 그대로 살리고 싶었던 거 같다.
군더더기 없이 정말 깔끔한 커버 버전이다.
이번 버전은...FREDDIE MERCURY TRIBUTE 공연에서의 게리 쉐론이다.
이 친구는 EXTREAM 밴드의 보컬인데, 복장이나 기타 느낌은 메탈과는 조금 거리가 있어 보이는데,
실력은 정말 훌륭하다.
다만, 무대 퍼포먼스를 너무 엉덩이를 흔들어대는 바람에 자신이 가진 리듬을 잘 타는 보컬 스타일로 만드는 것 같은
느낌인데, 그렇다고 해도 원곡에서 크게 벗어나지는 않게 정말 좋다.
원곡보다는 게리 쉐론이 커버한 곡이 더 머리속에 남는게 큰 오류이다.
그런데, 정말로 리듬은 잘 탄다.
이제는 뭔가 좀 더 강렬한 커버곡을 찾아야되는데...몇 곡 듣고 있는데
원곡에서 크게 벗어나지 않은 커버들이라 잘하기는 하는데, 식상한다.
더 이상 안 올릴려고 했는데, 이 사람들 커버는 너무 좋아서 이것까지 올려야 겠다.

Live performances
A concert favourite, "Hammer to Fall" was the third song on the band's setlist at Live Aid, after "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Radio Ga Ga".[6] Live versions of the song in the 1980s also usually served as an opportunity for touring keyboardist Spike Edney to appear onstage playing rhythm guitar, as he was usually not visible from behind his keyboard stack. "Hammer to Fall" features in the setlist of both The Works Tour and The Magic Tour.[8][9]
라이브 에이드에서의 세번째 곡이다. (이게 그렇게 중요한 정보인가...꽤 자주 나오네 -.-;)
불쌍한 키보디스트..무대에 나오지도 못하고, 뒤에서 연주하는 불운한 운명.
At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992, Extreme singer Gary Cherone performed the song with Queen and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, having previously done a medley of other Queen songs with his own group.[12]
A different version of the song with the first part played in the style of a ballad was played by Queen + Paul Rodgers in 2005.
2005년에는 폴 로져스랑 발라드 버전으로 불렀다는데, 유튜브에서 한 번 들어봤는데, 완전 별루 -.-;;
이 곡에 대한 해석인데,
COLD WAR라고 해석했던 사람들이 많은거 같은데, MAY가 한방에 정리해줬다.
The question of the meaning of the song was effectively settled when May wrote on his website that "Hammer to Fall is really about life and death, and being aware of death as being part of life", and that "the Hammer coming down is only a symbol of the Grim Reaper doing his job!"[10]

라이브에서는 그렇게 자주 불렀지만, 생각보다 순위는 높지가 않은걸...
